Nowadays, it seems like everyone is talking about hummus, and not just because it’s a fun word to say (you have to admit it is fun to say and you probably just said it). However, all the hubbub about hummus is around for good reason. In case you haven’t noticed, hummus dip recipes are delicious, like really delicious, like so-delicious-you-can’t-even-believe-it’s-actually-good-for-you delicious!
This isn’t the 1950’s anymore where housewives — real housewives, not reality television housewives — gathered together to see who had the best deviled egg recipes or party appetizer ideas. Back in those days, hummus dips were practically unheard of in the United States. When hummus spreads finally made their way to the American marketplace, most were confined to health or specialty ethnic food stores. Needless to say, Americans were missing out.
Fast-forward to today, and there are a variety of hummus dip recipes, even dessert hummus varieties such as chocolate! Other common hummus flavor varieties include roasted garlic or roasted red pepper hummus, both of which are simple and easy hummus dip recipes to make at home.
Now that spring and summer are just around the corner — finally — it’s time to get cracking on some homemade hummus dip recipes. They’re perfect for entertaining, and make fast and easy appetizers. After all, you can never go wrong with dips and spreads, right?
Don’t let making hummus at home intimidate you. It’s fairly simply, and requires very little prep time. The easiest part is the base, which consists of ground chickpeas (you can use fresh or canned), fresh lemon juice, fresh garlic, and a dash of sea salt. Optional yet traditional additions include a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and tahini, which is creamy, nutty paste made from ground, toasted sesame seeds.
After making the base, simply add your favorite flavor combinations and that’s it! Enjoy!
